The Fat and the Lean Tales of Occupied Paris

Jean Dutourd · Translated, with an introduction and notes, by Patricia Azarias · [Publisher, year]

The funniest novel about occupied Paris you've never read — a best seller for decades, by one of France's most brilliant and storied authors, Resistance hero, working journalist, distinguished member of the Académie Française, Jean Dutourd.

A new translation of Au Bon Beurre (1952), which has never been out of print since 1954 and was serialized for television. Made with the support of the heirs of Jean Dutourd.

Once they were sitting down in their compartment, the Poissonards unwrapped their provisions. Even though the train took eighteen hours to get to Vichy, even though they beefed and porked every half hour, they still did not manage to get to the end of their supplies. Their travelling companions gazed at them with demented eyes. Between mouthfuls, the Poissonards lectured them about morality and politics.

Six lives

Patricia describes herself six ways. Choose one to read that life; the places it touched are filled in on the line below.

The Secrets of the Blue Box began as Patricia's Ph.D. at the University of Technology Sydney, written about her extraordinary mother Sol. It opens with a cache of hidden family secrets, deposited by her mother, telling of an early romance that had remained entirely unknown to her. Her examiners called it a magnificent doctorate and said they could see it become an instant best seller.
